Curriculum Overview – 2022
Our curriculum ensures learning is effective, exciting and relevant to the needs of our children.
As well as good academic achievement in English and Mathematics, children should have access to a broad, exciting and engaging curriculum enabling them to become better thinkers, independent learners and having the ability to collaborate. Our curriculum is designed on the National Curriculum 2014 and aims to prepare children for life in the 21st Century.
All pupils will secure firm foundations in English and Mathematics and this underpins the basis for all other subjects. Our curriculum offers a broad range of subjects from Early Years through to Key Stage 2 (KS2). We believe in bringing learning to life, both indoors and out, with an emphasis on engaging and purposeful learning. While emphasis is placed on children learning core skills of English and Maths, we place great value on developing the ‘whole child’ and provide an engaging programme of study in all curriculum areas.
Our vision is at the heart of our curriculum.
‘Encourage one another, and build each other up’ (1 Thessalonians 5:11) to make the BEST of the lives we have been gifted by God by Believing we can change things for the better; rEspecting our environment and each other; Supporting our friends and community and Taking every opportunity to learn.
At Claverley CE Primary, children are taught in mixed age classes. The School’s curriculum content includes all those areas specified in the National Curriculum 2014, providing a base for an education that ensures quality and progression. Claverley School is set in an area of great beauty and we take every opportunity for the children to appreciate this. Our Curriculum embraces the local community. Whilst we live in a rural setting, we ensure our children have many opportunities for sport; many visits to places of natural interest; visits to places of historical significance for their history learning; visits to develop their knowledge of geography about our local area that can then be applied to their wider geography knowledge.
The spiritual, moral, social and cultural aspect of our curriculum threads through every topic. Children experience first-hand, visits to places of spiritual importance and welcome visitors from different faiths and cultures to school.
Through richly planned experiences within a topic and the use of a cross-curricular approach where the curriculum allows, pupils will embed and use knowledge fluently at a mastery level and build their knowledge of vocabulary.
Claverley Primary School prides itself on being fully inclusive, with high expectations and aspirations for all pupils. Our aim is to develop knowledgeable, well-rounded, motivated and happy children who are well taught and cared for during their time at the school.
EYFS – Transition from nursery to the Reception year takes place in the summer term. Many children move from the private on-site nursery and staff create opportunities to visit the children and get to know them ahead of them starting in September. There are opportunities for taster sessions for all children prior to them starting school and a parents’ meeting to familiarise them with the routines ahead of their children starting their school life.
Following a settling in period where staff get to know children, teaching staff begin to plan and deliver a curriculum which is tailored specifically for our cohort of children – based on their interests, relevant events (such as festivals, seasons) and their needs. This process of planning a tailored curriculum continues throughout the year following a very tight cycle of intent, implementation and impact. The impact of our curriculum is continually monitored carefully both formally and informally to ensure all of our children are making progress to meet the Early Learning Goal’s by the end of the Reception year.
Reception children access phonics, maths, guided reading, literacy and topic. Our topic delivery is derived from a mix of children’s interests and expected knowledge. In addition to our fun lessons, there is also a huge focus on exploratory play in Reception which is enhanced by activities linked to topics and core texts, which children access both on a morning and an afternoon. Children are encouraged to be independent learners and a carefully structured learning environment enhances and expands children’s skills and experiences.
Each week, we also offer curriculum enrichment via Forest School sessions which are delivered by a Teaching Assistant who is a Forest School lead. Music is delivered by a specialist from Shropshire Music Service.
In KS1, children continue their learning journey at Claverley. In the mornings children have morning tasks, Maths; Reading and Writing lessons (with the exception of teacher PPA time when other subjects might be taught in the morning).
In YR1, children continue to have daily phonics lessons in order to extend their knowledge of letter sounds (Read, Write, Inc phonics) and to deepen their understanding and application skills. In YR2, children build on their phonic knowledge via daily Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPAG) lessons. Those children who are working below age related expectations in phonics will continue to focus on developing their phonic knowledge.
In the afternoons, children access the wider curriculum through carefully planned topics. Science, RE, PSHE, History or Geography, Computing, Art or DT and Music are delivered as discrete weekly lessons. There are times when some subjects are taught in weekly blocks each half-term to better ensure continuity and consolidation of learning. In KS1, PE takes place during timetabled sessions. Children continue to have some planned Forest School sessions throughout the year.
Across KS1, English and Maths interventions are in place to support children who have been identified as having gaps in their learning via ongoing summative and formative assessments. Interventions are tailored to meet individual needs and are timetabled to ensure that children do not miss out on any of their whole class learning.
The progress of all pupils in KS1 is carefully tracked using our whole school assessment tool (ITrack).
In KS1, we aim to make learning fun, interactive and relevant to the experiences of our children, their environment and that of the wider world. Learning is not merely focused on the academic aspects of school as we also aim to support and nurture children to be the best they can be; to celebrate their differences and showcase their differing areas of strength.
In KS2, we believe in the importance of helping our pupils develop as a whole person – happy and ready to take the next steps into their education and lives beyond primary school, regardless of their starting point. We celebrate our difference.
Our aim is to create an exciting, interesting set of activities that are underpinned by the knowledge, skills and understanding relevant for each year group. Our curriculum will promote and foster confidence, independence, co-operation and self-esteem throughout the time the children are at Claverley Primary School. We want all of our children to leave with a range of experiences, the self-belief to excel and to understand the feeling of enjoyment.
Our curriculum is carefully crafted so that our children develop their academic, social and cultural skills. We have made informed choices about what experiences we want to include and how they build over time across the curriculum. We include both off and on-site experiences in our curriculum and make the most of what we have locally.
In KS2, children continue taking part in morning tasks, maths, reading and writing lessons every morning.
The progress of all pupils in KS1 is carefully tracked using our whole school assessment tool (ITrack).
In the afternoons, children access the wider curriculum through carefully planned topics. Science; RE; PSHE; History or Geography, Computing, Art or DT and Music (Music is taught by specialist teachers during PPA sessions including Shropshire Music Service) are delivered as discrete weekly lessons. Some subjects can be taught in weekly blocks each half-term to better ensure continuity and consolidation of learning. In KS2, PE takes place during timetabled afternoon sessions and is taught by specialist coaches who work within school.
INTENT – The Long Term Plans which sets the vision.
IMPLEMENTED – The Medium Term Plans which shows how the vision is delivered. These ensure progression building on prior learning.
IMPACT – Each subject is assessed to show what the children have learnt.
